The Huddersfield branch of the Latvian Welfare Fund started in 1950 but only acquired its own premises in 1972, at the price of £7000. The club members undertook redecorations and in 1973 the club bar was opened. The premises were inaugurated on 20 September 1974 by the Very Rev. Edgars Bergs. The building was called “Pajumte” (Shelter) and was also used by local Estonian and Lithuanian groups.
Over the years the older generation aged and died out, the younger generation was not so keen on Latvian activities and in the main had married other nationalities, so the club became another bar for the local English population. The building was sold in November 2013.
